The mission of Friends of Waimea CERT is to “do the greatest good for the greatest number of people” when a disaster strikes our communities. The Friends of Waimea CERT Program, is administered by the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency (HCCDA), aims to build community resilience. The CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a group of volunteers created by members of a neighborhood or workplace who want to be well-prepared for the hazards that threaten their communities. As CERT members, safety should always be their top priority and volunteers need to be aware of their abilities, and limitations of their training and equipment, and work accordingly. CERT’s program includes: Educating and Training for disaster preparedness in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The CERT program offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disasters, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
